An unexpected invitation for the National Boys’ Choir! To mark its 200th anniversary, the Royal Conservatory of The Hague organized a performance of Benjamin Britten’s monumental *War Requiem*. A work that holds special significance, particularly in The Hague as an international city of peace and justice.

In September, this project wasn't on our schedule yet. When the invitation came in, we asked the guys: Did they see any way they could participate on such short notice?

That wasn’t an obvious question. The boys come from all over the country and meet only once every three weeks for a group rehearsal. In addition, they take weekly lessons in small groups at their regional practice locations. As a result, organizing extra rehearsals isn’t easy, and participating in a project like this would require a lot of independent preparation.

Still, there was a great deal of enthusiasm. The chance to sing even more and to discover a new work by Britten was enough motivation for most of the boys to take on the challenge.

Over the course of four weeks, the students studied intensively. It was also remarkable to see the parents’ involvement, as they supported their children in all sorts of ways: from helping with homework to brainstorming practical and logistical solutions. It was heartwarming to witness their natural dedication and commitment.

In the end, it all came together during three special evenings at the Grote Kerk in The Hague.

During the dress rehearsal, Director Lies Colman said something that aptly summed up the significance of the project:

“We live in troubled times, and in such times, music speaks a universal language. Art does not change the world, but art changes people, and people can change the world.”

On stage were students and alumni of the Royal Conservatory, along with the Residentie Bach Choir and the National Boys’ Choir. It was a performance of Britten’s impressive work, in which the new generation of musicians also played a significant role.

Three evenings where music, peace, and hope came together.
