Classic Top 400

What is it that leaves us breathless and still at the end of Fauré’s Requiem? That in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater Wipe away a tear? And that our heart rates race during the finale of Beethoven’s 5th? We don’t have an answer. What’s certain is that these works are once again high on the Classical Top 400 chart. The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Women’s Youth Choir accompany the list with a musical celebration of familiar favorites.

New notes
As always, there’s also room for new pieces that have the potential to become evergreens. This time, harpist Remy van Kesteren will be performing his own works for harp and orchestra. The musician, who received the Dutch Music Prize in 2016, has developed into an adventurous harpist and a gifted composer of music that is as appealing as it is exciting.

Matthew Passion
The Classical Top 400 began in 2012 as the Hart & Ziel List and has grown to become the classical counterpart to the Top 2000. Listeners of NPO Klassiek determine the list by voting. Bach’s Matthew Passion has been the one since the list began Bohemian Rhapsody from the classics. The Radio Philharmonic Orchestra always caps off the week of broadcasts featuring this list with a wonderful live concert.
