A dramatic oratorio by Julia Wolfe featuring 146 female singers

With the large-scale oratorio Fire in My Mouth Julia Wolfe commemorates the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. It was a fire at a textile factory in Manhattan that claimed the lives of 146 young women, most of whom were immigrants. Using a choir, orchestra, and video, Wolfe weaves together archival texts, memories, folk songs, and protest songs to create both a memorial and an indictment of exploitation and indifference. Inner Night
While Wolfe looks back on what became a turning point in New York’s social history, Samy Moussa focuses on the Dutch premiere of his orchestral work Nocturne on the inner night. Not an Impressionist night scene, but a psychological space with its center of gravity in the lower registers, so that “the few bright moments become all the more exceptional.” An American critic called the work “an orchestral adagio that inevitably brings to mind a 21st-century Wagner.”
